How to Prepare for a Curriculum-Based 11+ Test
How parents can prepare children for curriculum-led 11+ exams by strengthening KS2 Maths, English, problem solving and timed accuracy.
Curriculum-based does not mean easy
A curriculum-based 11+ test can still be demanding. The challenge is often not whether a child has seen a topic before, but whether they can apply it accurately, quickly and calmly in an unfamiliar question.
Good preparation should therefore build both knowledge and application: pupils need to understand the method, choose it independently and check whether the answer makes sense.
The preparation mix
A balanced plan should include KS2 Maths fluency, reading comprehension, vocabulary, grammar, punctuation, problem solving, timed practice and correction work.
Parents should avoid jumping straight into full papers if the child still has topic gaps. Teach the skill first, then test whether it transfers into mixed questions.
