What should happen in Year 5

Year 5 is usually when 11+ preparation becomes more focused. Pupils need topic diagnosis, mixed practice, timed tasks, correction work and parent feedback.

Where an area tests earlier in Year 5, families need to know gaps sooner. Where testing remains later, Year 5 can still be used to strengthen weak areas before mock-style practice.

  • Topic diagnosis
  • Targeted teaching
  • Mixed 11+ practice
  • Timed tasks
  • Correction work
  • Mock-style review
  • Exam confidence

Matching the route to the child

A Year 5 pupil preparing for GL may need more verbal and non-verbal reasoning. A pupil preparing for an FSCE-style route may need stronger KS2 Maths, English, problem solving and written response confidence.

Coach Dean Tutoring helps parents separate the entry year, target route and child's current needs so the plan is not generic.
