Non-Verbal Reasoning Parent Guide

A parent-friendly guide to non-verbal reasoning, visual patterns, rotations, matrices and 11+ exam confidence.

Why non-verbal reasoning feels different

Non-verbal reasoning is unfamiliar for many pupils because it is not taught as a normal school subject. It uses shapes, patterns, rotations, reflections, matrices and spatial logic.

Children can improve with method. They learn to check shape, number, position, shading, direction and sequence rather than guessing.

Practice without panic

Start slowly, teach the pattern-spotting checklist, then add timing gradually. If pupils are timed too early, they may rush and lose confidence.

Correction work is especially helpful because it shows the rule the child missed.
