Published local reporting says the Trafford Grammar School Consortium is replacing GL Assessment with FSCE from 2028 entry. The reported new format is expected to be more closely aligned with Key Stage 2 English and Maths up to the end of Year 5.
For parents, the important point is timing. Current candidates should not abandon the existing route too early, but younger pupils need preparation that builds deeper curriculum confidence rather than relying only on question-type drilling.
The timeline parents should understand
For 2027 entry, reported information says there is no change and GL remains the provider. For 2028 entry, FSCE is expected to take over. From 2029 entry onward, the test is expected to move into the summer term of Year 5.
That means Year 4 and early Year 5 become more important. Families waiting until Year 6 will have less time if the earlier test window applies to their child.
How preparation should respond
The safest response is a stronger foundation-first plan: reading comprehension, vocabulary in context, grammar, punctuation, arithmetic, fractions, percentages, worded problems, timing and correction work.
Reasoning practice can still support flexible thinking, especially for pupils still facing GL-style tests, but the balance should depend on the child's entry year and target route.
