Verbal Reasoning Parent Guide

A clear parent guide to verbal reasoning for 11+ preparation, including vocabulary, word patterns, codes and timed practice.

What verbal reasoning tests

Verbal reasoning looks at how children use words, patterns and logic. It often rewards vocabulary, careful reading and flexible thinking.

Children who read widely may have an advantage, but they still need to learn common question types and how to work accurately under time pressure.

How to improve

Build vocabulary little and often. Discuss new words, synonyms, antonyms and word relationships. Practise codes and patterns in short bursts rather than long sessions.

When mistakes happen, identify the reason. Was it vocabulary, method, timing or attention?
