What has changed
Published local reporting says the Trafford Grammar School Consortium is replacing GL Assessment with Future Stories Community Enterprise, known as FSCE, for 2028 entry. The new test is expected to be more closely aligned with the Key Stage 2 English and Maths curriculum up to the end of Year 5.
The consortium schools named in the report are Altrincham Grammar School for Boys, Altrincham Grammar School for Girls, Sale Grammar School, Stretford Grammar School and Urmston Grammar School. Families should still check the schools' current admissions information before making final decisions.

Timeline for parents
For children applying for 2027 entry, reported information says there is no change and GL Assessment remains the provider. For 2028 entry, FSCE is expected to take over. For 2029 entry onward, the entrance test is expected to move earlier, into the summer term of Year 5.
This earlier testing window changes the preparation rhythm. Families who previously waited until late Year 5 or Year 6 will need to think earlier about reading stamina, vocabulary, arithmetic, problem solving and confidence with timed work.

What pupils should prepare now
The safest preparation is not panic drilling. Pupils need deep KS2 Maths and English strength: number fluency, fractions, decimals, percentages, problem solving, reading comprehension, inference, grammar, punctuation, spelling and vocabulary in context.
Reasoning should not disappear from a good programme. Even when an exam becomes more curriculum-led, pupils still need flexible thinking, careful elimination, timing, checking and the ability to apply what they know to unfamiliar questions.
